Navigating Challenges for South African Teachers in South Korea

As part of our ongoing commitment to transparency and support, we wanted to provide an update specifically for South African applicants interested in teaching in South Korea. Over recent months, we’ve observed an evolving trend that has made it increasingly challenging for South African teachers to secure positions in South Korean schools.

The Current Situation

Many schools in South Korea have grown hesitant to interview or hire South African applicants. There is a growing perception that South Africans are desired less for teaching positions, and the number of South African teachers seeking jobs has risen sharply. This increase is evident in online expat and teaching communities, especially on Facebook. As a result, the market is becoming saturated with South African teachers, leading to fierce competition.

Given these circumstances, we have had to make some necessary adjustments to our program for South African teachers. However, we remain dedicated to finding opportunities, both in South Korea and other potential destinations, to support teachers in their career goals.

What This Means for South African Applicants

At this time, South African applicants will primarily be offered opportunities to apply for public school positions in South Korea. The good news is that we have an excellent track record, with 90-95% of our teachers successfully passing interviews for these roles. We are confident that many South African candidates will still find placement in public schools through this route.

If public school placements in South Korea are not an option, we will explore other possibilities, such as teaching opportunities in Japan (through the ALT Public School Intake) or Thailand, where placement timelines are often quicker and more flexible.

Please note that this policy applies even to those who are currently teaching in South Korea and are seeking additional placements. While we will make every effort to place these teachers, they may face delays due to the current job market dynamics.

Important Considerations

There are some important factors for South African applicants to keep in mind:

  • Proof of English Education: South African teachers applying for public school positions in South Korea must provide proof that they completed 10 years of schooling in English. Unfortunately, applicants who cannot meet this requirement will be ineligible for these positions.
  • Driving License Requirement for Japan: For those interested in teaching in Japan, a valid South African driver’s license is a key requirement for the ALT Public School Intake.

Supporting Teachers Already in the System

For South African teachers who are already in the process of securing placements, or who are currently teaching in South Korea, we will continue to provide full support. However, there may be delays due to the current market saturation. We are actively assessing the progress of these teachers and will be reaching out to each of them to discuss the best path forward.

Conclusion

While the situation for South African teachers in South Korea has become more challenging, we are committed to finding solutions. Whether it’s placing teachers in public schools in South Korea or exploring alternative destinations, our goal is to help South African educators continue their teaching journeys.

We understand that these changes may be disappointing for some, but rest assured, we are doing everything we can to provide opportunities that align with the evolving landscape. Stay connected with us for updates and guidance on your next steps.
